Cannot save changes to the allowed characters in the image captcha

Michiel (fokke.org) reported a bug in the settings function that prevents proper saving of changes to the allowed characters in the image captcha. He was so kind to provide the attached patch.
The patch has been committed to the repository and will find its way to a 1.1 release next week.
